Richard bought his poppy for his Great Uncle – the only professional footballer to receive the Victoria Cross

“I bought the poppy to commemorate my Gt Uncle, 2nd Lt Donald S Bell VC of the Green Howards who was killed on July 10th 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. On July 5th 1916 he destroyed a German machine gun which was holding up his company’s attack on a position known as horseshoe trench. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for this exploit but was killed before he got to know of the award.

Prior to the war he was a school teacher and also played football for Bradford Park Avenue and is the only professional footballer to receive the VC. I placed my poppy at his grave on Sept 9th 2016 when visiting the area with other members of my family to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battle.”
