I actually visited the Tower of London twice to see the wonderful poppies, the second time taking my sister. I have a special interest in all aspects of the First World War and have visited many of the Battlefields with a friend. One year we travelled along the whole of the front line from Belgium to Switzerland. As a teacher I took groups of 10 and 11 year olds to visit places like Hill 52, Tyne Cot, Essex Farm, Langemarck, making sure they knew and understood all that they stood for. We then stayed at the Menin Gate for the Last Post Ceremony and on two occasions two of our children presented a wreath. I believe that our children should be made aware of the real meaning of war, the sacrifices and the horror.
I was delighted when it was announced that the Tower Poppies could be bought and I bought four, one for my sister, one for my niece and one for my nephew’s wife – and of course one for me, which has pride of place in my living room.
