We purchased a Tower of London poppy to commemorate my husband’s uncle Private William Thomas Ellen , The Buffs, who was killed in action at The Battle of Paschendalle on 12th October 1917, aged 18.
His brother, my father in law, always talked about him. So when he died in 1999 we made it our mission to find out all we could about William.
William’s name was read out on The Roll of Honour at the Tower of London.
We visited Tyn Cott and found his name on the wall.
Such an emotional and moving experience.
Our ceramic poppy is displayed proudly on our mantelpiece.
