I bought four poppies … one for myself and one each in memory of my mum, dad and brother – all of whom, I know, would have bought one had they still been alive. My dad and brother both served in the Royal Engineers and my mum did war work.

I moved house last year, and the poppies are still safely packed away, but I’ll eventually display them permanently in my conservatory, among the plants my mum loved so much, and looking out over the peaceful Scottish countryside, which I will never take for granted, because I know how hard-won that peace was.
