I originally bought two poppies as both my husband Matthew and I had relatives that had fought in WWI. My grandfather had signed up in his mid thirties to the RASC but sadly although he made it through to the end of the war, he died young as he had been gassed during the war which weakened his heart, he died before I was born. Buying this poppy was my way of honouring him. My husband had a great uncle on his Grandfathers side that had fought and returned. However the second Poppy’s story was not yet finished.
Matthew’s stepfather found out about the sale of the poppies and really wanted to purchase one in memory of his two uncles who were killed during WWI, one died at Passchendaele and his body was never found, his other uncle is buried in France. However, by the time he had heard of the sale they were all sold, so our second poppy became a birthday gift and now resides near Perth in Scotland.
