I brought the poppy in memory of my Grandads Brother, Ernest Henry Hyde who was killed in WW1. He signed up despite being under age, and after being injured once, he went back again and was eventually killed a couple of weeks before the end of the War – such a very brave young man who deserved to be honoured by future generations.
When the installation was under way and they were calling for volunteers I thought it was the least I could do and I eventually took place in the decommissing of the poppies from the Tower. I am keeping the poppy in its original packaging in a cupboard, along with the certificate to show where in France Ernest is buried so that one day maybe my Daughter will also honour him.
