My mother’s father was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He has no known grave and is therefore commemorated at Thiepval. His death meant that my mother’s life changed as her mother had to move from her middle class life in Edinburgh to get work as a tram ‘clippy’ on a much reduced income. I thought it only right that I bought my grandfather’s poppy as one of the fallen. It is in a special display frame but is not on permanent display as it would fade into the background and not really be seen. It is put on display each first of July and during November for Remembrance Day when I remember the grandfather that I never had the chance to know.
