My Great Grandfather, Private Harry Blackman was killed in action on the 31st July 1917. He was killed at Ypres and is remembered on the Menin Gate. Harry only saw my Gran a couple of times and was killed before he met his youngest daughter May. I went with my father to visit the Menin Gate in 2009. We were the first members of our family to visit. Buying this poppy was important as it signifies the life Harry never got to enjoy, not seeing the family he left behind grow and the terribly sad end to his life. I’m still struggling to decide how and where to display the poppy as it is very precious to me. I am extremely proud to have such a tiny piece of this incredibly moving national memorial.
