Bought my poppy in remembrance of my Great Uncle William Wilson – died 2nd Aug 1917 who was in South Lancs 25 Div, 75th Infantry, 8th Bn (service no 37562). Killed in action during the Third Battle for Ypres and buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery. After some lengthy research my brother and I recently visited the area and retraced his likely route over the last few days of his life 100 years ago and placed a remembrance cross including William’s details almost to the exact spot where he finally fell. Very moving indeed. Since we did that, the owner of the land where we left our little remembrance cross has very cleverly traced us from the details and is keen to learn more about William and has also visited his grave – a new friendship has begun. My poppy sadly caught an early frost last year and is being repaired.
