On a visit to the Devonshire cemetery at Mametz I found the grave of Albert Carpenter, whose mother lived in my village. He died on the first day on the Somme. When I returned home I made sure his name was added to our village memorial. I think about him every time I walk by, or pass the house where his mother lived. Albert was a farm lad who took the King’s shilling in 1914. ” We walk towards the waiting guns” ( Show of Hands). To me, my poppy represents Albert.
