I was so moved by the size, scale and beauty of the installation. The poppy is a really potent symbol of the war. Both my parents and my husband’s parents came to this country and never saw their loved ones again. His to escape Nazism and mine to escape communism. We were brought up without grandparents, uncles or aunts. It is wonderful to have a physical symbol and reminder of that loss. My poppy is placed among photos of my husbands family and my parents only wedding picture where they married without their families around them. My dear father, 96 years old now, is the young soldier pictured in Italy, never to see his parents or brothers again. Thank you to the artist and all involved for not allowing us to forget.
