I bought my poppy and I was part of the poppy removal team and the installation meant an awful lot to me, and to the friends who I completed the removal process alongside. When Jeremy Deller’s “We Are Here” took place in 2016 to mark the centenary of the first day of the battle of the Somme, I was handed one of the cards which the soldiers were distributing in Victoria station and ever since this has been displayed along with my ceramic poppy.
My ceramic poppy and card are usually displayed under a glass dome and although I live in a constant state of concern about someone accidentally smashing it, I was always determined that the poppy should be displayed openly, not hidden away in a box. The notion that once the poppies were sold they would finally get to go home, as the soldiers they represented never did, was incredibly poignant and I am proud to say that my poppy is a treasured part of my home.
