Our poppy is named in remembrance of Lt Philip Anthony Brown 13th DLI who was killed in action near Armentieres on 4th November 1915 whilst leading a patrol. He got shot by a sniper through both thighs and was , over the long foggy night, taken back, under heavy fire, to his own trench by his Observer ( servant) . On reaching safety, Brown said ” well Kenny< you’re a hero” and passed away. Kenny was awarded the VC for his actions that night. Like the rest of his comrades, Kenny VC had been a WEA student of Brown’s.

Brown’s brother, captain Theodore Anthony Brown MC was to die 15th April 1917.
