I registered to buy my poppy when it was first announced they were being offered for sale. It was bought in remembrance of all those Barnfathers and Twidales who fought and lost their lives fighting. The names Barnfather and Twidale are significant names in my family history and although I didn’t lose any direct family member during the First World War, nevertheless, it felt appropriate to honour those who did sadly have their lives taken from them as there were many in the wider family who did perish. My paternal grandfather Private Ernest William Twidale served in the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and my maternal grandfather, Walter Leeson, was a sergeant in the Yorks and Lancaster Regiment. They were the lucky ones who not only returned to their families uninjured but were able to marry and go on to raise their own families. We are indebted to their courage.
