I bought the poppy in remembrance of my grandfather, Thomas Cameron, who died very early in WW1 (October 1914) on his 40th birthday. He had been wounded at the battle of Antwerp and was removed to Chatham where he died – leaving a widow and four very young boys, one of whom was my father. His brother died at El Alamein. Respect to all those who died in the wars and, often forgotten, the women back on the home front. The appalling suffering of people like my grandmother, having to explain to four boys under eight why their father wasn’t coming home for Christmas, is beyond comprehension.
