Purchased my poppy in honour of my Great Grandfather SGT William Ankers who won the Distinguished Conduct Medal, when he with one other soldier were sent to capture 5 German observers. When they got closer they discovered that there were in fact 50 German soldiers with several machine guns. Instead of turning back, my grandather told his friend to make a noise so they shouted, screamed and rattled their bayonets, the Germans thought there were many more British soldiers and so they fled. My Great Grandfather and his colleague captured 30 Germans and 4 machine guns. This took place at Festonburt on 9th April 1918. My Great Grandfather had been in France since May 1915.
