My daughter bought me my poppy as a gift, in memory of my Grandfather, Harold Ward, of the 10th Btn West Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action at Monchy le Preux on the 12th April 1917 aged 27, when my mother was only 2 years old. My Grandmothers youngest brother, Thomas Dunnell of the 1st/4th Btn Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action 11 days later during the same campaign, aged just 19. I promised my mother that I would never let my Grandfather or my Gt Uncle be forgotten. My poppy is very proudly displayed together with my Grandfather’s medals and bronze plaque at home in our music room. A permanent reminder of the Grandfather and Gt Uncle who I never had the privilege to meet and of the sacrifice that they and so many others made.
